The Chairman of the Security and Defense Committee in Nineveh province on Tuesday expressed fear that some security commanders may enroll in political parties, expressing confidence in the Iraqi forces’ ability to safeguard security in the province following the U.S. forces withdrawal. “I believe there are some passive elements regarding the security forces, especially the Army, due to the enrollment of some commanders to political parties. However we have complete trust in our forces to protect security in the Province,” Abdul-Rahim al-Shimmari said. “The evidence for the Iraqi forces ability to protect security is in Nineveh province. The province experienced an extensive presence of U.S. troops in the area. There are now only limited areas where these troops still exists,” he added.

Regarding coordination between the civilian administration of the province and the security forces, al-Shimmari said, “The activity during the past period had been carried out by the Army and the police forces, but the forthcoming period shall witness cooperation with the local administration to achieve security in Nineveh Province.” Al-Shimmari did not hide his anxiety from weakness of coordination between the civil and military authorities in the province, pointing out that “the recent period had witnessed a decision by Iraq’s Prime Minister that Nineveh’s governor must lead the security committee in the province, and we think that things would go on in the best possible way between the security forces and the local administration”.
